Linoleum

Wet areas (utility room, bathroom and kitchen) are getting linoleum floors. Linoleum has been around a long time and works great; Linoleum is all natural, made mostly of linseed oil. I'm using Forbo pattern #5306 ("Domino") from their new Artoleum line. Since the main floor is ¾" solid oak; I'm using ½" CCX underlayment for the linoleum, so there won't be a big step between them. Underlayment is screwed down, 6" on edges, 9" in the field, with 1/8" gap at all edges. Joint compound is Ardex feather finish (portland cement based), which sands down fine with sharp 60 grit paper. Don't ask about the extra joint in the utility room.

should not be as wet as

so no worry.

OK, time to actually put some linoleum down. Picked up the very heavy roll in Medford and barely managed to unload it myself onto a dolly then into the house. Swept and vacuumed the subfloor then rolled out pieces and cut from the back side with a utility knife with new blades-- after measuring and re-measuring several times (and checking diagonals etc). First up is the utility room. It's one piece, but only has access from one side. All outside edges will be covered with ½" base board or T-molding at the doorway, so factory edges can be used. Test fit verdict: no trimming needed! But, got the stove bar mark on this piece. Pressed it with a piece of ¼" Masonite and sandbags and it vanished. Glueing was too important and tricky to stop and take pictures, so you miss all the 1/16" × 1/16" square-notch trowel action and J-rollering.
