The original Micro World Databank II (mwdb2.zip)
is a public domain dataset by Fred Popeschil and Antonio Rivera, derived from
the CIA's much larger World Databank II.
It contains about 180,000 points as compared to the WDB2's 5,000,000.
Points are ranked with a 1 to 5 detail level making this dataset suitable
for a wide range of small to medium-scale mapping; you can select the
detail level or let PAT vary it automatically as the map scale changes.
MWDB3 is an updated version with current political boundaries and
reservoirs, various other corrections and changes, topology, and a place-name
index. Distributed as plain text with a makefile (mwdb3.mak) to
convert it to PAT's binary format. Version 1.1 now has political boundaries
correct through 2013 (including South Sudan), and the data is also included
as .PNT files in the original format. Poke the eye to see tar contents.
