For centuries Lhasa, the lone city hid somewhere behind the Himalayas,
was known only to a few Chinese officials and a handful of priests and
adventurers. The first view of the place reveals it upon an eminence
in a surrounding plain. On entering, most buildings, fair outside,
are filthy within, and in the streets dogs and pigs munch the garbage
from house and booth
