HOOK-SWINGING
IN THE MADURA DISTRICT OF MADRAS IN HONOUR OF THE GODDESS MARI-AMMA
To an upright post a long cross-pole is pivoted in such a way that it can
be either rotated or its ends raised and lowered. The ropes attached to
the hooks are wound round the cross-pole, but not round the man's body,
and supported only by the hooks he is raised clear of the platform seen
in the lefthand picture. Two or three persons seated on a swing board
at the other end then shuffle round with their feet, so rotating the
fanatic, his deliberately incurred agony lasting as long as ten minutes
