Very few of the old "smoke cottages" are now to be found in the villages of Finland; they have been superseded by small houses with chimneys and windows. But the stove still remains the principal feature of a cottage interior; monopolising a large portion of the room, it often reaches from floor to ceiling, and its spacious flat-topped wings afford cozy resting-places to the family
