On Sundays and holidays in Bulgaria, gala costumes and handsome
headdresses make their appearance. For very important events the
flower-wreath is considered inadequate, and on an occasion such as this,
when the most beautiful girls of the village have been chosen to dance a
favourite ring dance, a profusion of coloured beads and jingling coins
hang about the head and shoulders, while trails of brilliant flowers
depend from a crested headdress

The vanity of youth is apparent in the headdress of young Bulgarian
women and those who possess fine heads of hair, by no means an unusual
thing among the peasants, delight in long plaits and coin adornments
