ORIENTALISM IN THE STREETS OF BULGARIA

On Sundays and holidays in Bulgaria, gala costumes and handsome headdresses make their appearance. For very important events the flower-wreath is considered inadequate, and on an occasion such as this, when the most beautiful girls of the village have been chosen to dance a favourite ring dance, a profusion of coloured beads and jingling coins hang about the head and shoulders, while trails of brilliant flowers depend from a crested headdress The vanity of youth is apparent in the headdress of young Bulgarian women and those who possess fine heads of hair, by no means an unusual thing among the peasants, delight in long plaits and coin adornments
