Siding is 8¼" HardiPlank (7" exposure). Hardi says for siding-only install (as on SIPs) to face-nail, but I'm going to blind-nail then go back over with face nails as needed. I really didn't want a painted exterior, but my first-choice rough-sawn cedar siding— which worked so well in El Cajon— would be a maintenance hassle up here. Fiber-cement takes paint amazingly well, so I have no worries of it coming off, just eventually wearing out. I'm pre-drilling and pre-painting one coat on the panels, then nailing them up by hand. Eventually a second coat of paint will be sprayed on. The SS nail which Hardi recommends cannot be driven through two layers of siding (as with face nailing)— it just accordions— so, pre-drilling is required. |
