The southernmost island of the Leeward group, Martinique specially endears
itself to France as the birthplace of the Empress Josephine; and here,
too, Madame de Maintenon, another famous figure in French history, passed
most of her early youth. A variety of colour and type prevails among
the present-day native islanders. Negroes predominate, but half-breeds
— mulattoes, Copres, Chabins, Matés — form a large
proportion of the population
