To the north-east of Northern Rhodesia lies Tanganyika Territory, formerly
German East Africa, and on these marches wild tribes, mainly of Bantu
type, hunt the game that still persists in these central vastnesses.
The Bantus are highly skilled in the use of home-made but deadly lances,
and in dressing for the fray their exaggerated headgear adds height and
terror to their appearance

Among the numerous tribes in Liberia the Vai stand out noticeably both by
keeping to their native costume which, as can be seen, is a graceful one
and in having invented their own system of writing. They form a branch
of the Mandingo race
