Rif or Er-Rif, a mountainous district in North Morocco, falls within the Spanish zone and is very wild and difficult of access. Here are to be found the retreats of the turbulent Berber tribes who have been in constant insurrection against Spain Tanala, or forest-dwellers, is the generic name given to a number of tribes living in the wooded regions of south-east Madagascar. The men are exceedingly expert spearmen, and usually carry shields made of circular pieces of tough wood, about eighteen inches in diameter, covered with undressed bullock-hide.
