but are not of such fine physique as their neighbors, the Shilluks.
They are a passive people, and have suffered much from the depredations
of slave-traders and Dervishes. Unenterprising and ignorant, they are
loath to adopt any modern innovation, simply on the pretext that it was
not the custom of their fathers
