LAMAIST PRIESTS OF SIKKIM AND THEIR WONDROUS ROBES

Chieftain of the ancient Ainu race, he is an impressive figure of aged dignity with his long beard and hair framing his brown face, in which dark eyes sparkle kindly, and falling over his embroidered kimono of Japanese style made of elm-bark fibre Talung Monastery is the most sacred in all Sikkim, being packed with objects of veneration and antiquity. To this foundation these two Lamas belong, and the one on the left is wearing the rugen, a complicated adornment of apron and circlet, beautifully carved but gruesome in origin, for it is made from human bones. The cloak and hat of the other are of great age and value
