ISLE OF A GODDESS, WHERE NO WOMAN MAY DWELL
Pu Tu, off the east coast of Chusan, is a sacred island exclusively the
abode of Buddhist monks, where no native woman may live on any pretext.
Phosphorescent waves breaking on the shore in long billows of flame give
origin to a legend that the Goddess of Mercy was seen to arrive in a ship,
burning, but unconsumed, and to her the island is dedicated

DEGENERATE PROFESSORS OF A ONCE PURE AND LOFTY RELIGION
Many Buddhist priests are friendly, even merry looking fellows, but
as a class they are ignorant and superstitious rather than religious.
Their cleanliness, too, is as disputable as their godliness, and the
Buddhist priesthood urgently needs reformation if it is ever again to
hold the respect of the Chinese people, by whom it is now regarded as
little better than a parasitical growth
