Weddings are celebrated with extraordinary fervour in some country
places of Germany; not always, perhaps, so much from a religious point of
view as from the fact that a marriage affords ample opportunity for the
delights of a family festival. The young men and maidens, often attired
as elaborately as the bride and bridegroom themselves, are the life of a
