UMIAK MANNED BY ESKIMO WOMEN IN THE WATERS
OFF THE COAST OF GREENLAND
Besides the kayak, which is perhaps the most interesting and
characteristic of all Eskimo inventions, and is absolutely essential to
the existence of these shore-dwelling tribes, there is a stouter and more
roomy vessel called the umiak, or women's boat. Covered with skin over
a framework of wood, it is flat bottomed, can carry considerable loads,
and is largely employed by the Eskimos in the movement of the tribes and
their belongings from one fishing station to another
