GETTING MARRIED BEFORE A REGISTRAR IN "RED RUSSIA"
In the foreground of this photo, taken in the Samoskvoretzki district,
are a couple about to be married. All they have to do is to sign their
names in the official register, and then hand the volume across the table
for the signature of the Registrar, who (as in this instance) is often
a woman. A three rouble note is then paid over by the bridegroom, and
in less than five minutes the marriage is regularized. In the background
another couple wait their turn — to be married or divorced, for both
are performed in the same place, for the same fee and with equal speed
