The Norman peasants are a conservative people and still preserve many
of the costumes of their ancestors, and this high headdress, daintily
arranged with lace and fine muslin, is a picturesque addition to the
women's dress on festive occasions

The husband is generously sharing the family load with his wife —
rather an unusual sight in Bulgaria. On market days, in particular,
the peasant families may be seen trudging along in true Oriental fashion
— the men in front walking unloaded, the women behind carrying the
goods for sale. Their footgear is by no means cumbersome, and this quaint
one-piece leather shoe is much favoured in many of the Balkan States
