DAVID MACKY WINS SINGLES AGAINST NORMAN SHAW

Ann Smith Makes Clean Sweep in Junior Tennis Championship

David Macky proved steadier and more powerful than his opponent Norman Shaw in the final of the boys' singles of the junior championships held at the Bermuda Tennis Stadium on Saturday, and beat his opponent 6-3, 6-2 for the 1951 championship.

The play was not spectacular and neither player appeared to be at the top of his form. The match was played from the baseline with Shaw giving Macky's backhand a workout and Macky being equal to the occasion.

Macky had more pace than his opponent and was just a shade steadier but it was in his service where the great difference between opponents lay. Macky has a big serve that gives him a decided edge.

The game opened with Macky breaking Shaw's service and holding his own for a 2-0 advantage in the first set. Games followed service then until the fifth when Macky broke through Shaw again for a 4-1 lead.

Neither player was able to hold his service for the remainder of the set, Macky breaking through Shaw in the ninth game for a 6-3 set.

In the second set, Shaw broke Macky's service and Macky took Shaw's service to even the match. Each held his own service in the next two games, but Macky turned on the pressure when Shaw tried softening his game, and Macky took the next four games in a row for a 6-2 set.

FINALISTS PAIR

The finalists paired together for the finals of the boys' doubles, winning the championship against the team of Ray Constable and Michael Marsh. Macky and Shaw played well together winning 6-2, 6-3. Macky used some drop volleys to good effect while Shaw made some nice placements down the side lines.

For the losers, Marsh drove well from the baseline while Constable, with his fleetness of foot, intercepted shots at the net for winners.

Ann Smith made a clean sweep of the tournament on Saturday, winning the girls' singles championship against Marianne Robinson, 6-3, 6-3. She then paired with Marianne Robinson to win the girls' doubles championshiop over Jennifer Freisenbruch and Paula Schulke, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in a good match.

On Friday Ann Smith and Norman Shaw had taken the mixed doubles title from David Macky and Paula Schulke.

Ann Smith had things pretty well under control in her match against Marianne Robinson for she mixed up her game, giving her opponent a short ball then a long one, causing her to err.

The match was played from the baseline as well for each time Marianne Robinson came to the net, Ann Smith put up a lob that beat her.

GOOD VOLLEYS

The girls' doubles produced some good volleys at the net and it looked for a while as if the favoured team of Ann Smith and Marianna Robinson were going to be beaten. After dropping the first set 5-7, the champions came back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-4.

Ann Smith contined to lob well, her accuracy in this department making points for her team. All four players showed considerable skill at the net with steadiness the deciding factor in the championships.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Mr. Malcolm Gosling, new president of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club, presented the prizes.

In his presentation speech, Mr. Gosling spoke of the sportsmanship of the plyers which was quite evident, and of the improvement in the game of the juniors. In this connection he praised the work of Charles Ward, tennis professional at the Bermuda Stadium, who was also responsible for running the tournament.

Mr. Gosling also reminded the players of the intermediate tennis tournament which will start August 6.

Tributes were also paid to Mrs. Helen Nicholls and Mrs. Marsh who contributed so much of their time in aiding the juniors in their tournament.
