CHILDREN OF NATURE AT HOME IN THE HINTERLAND OF GUIANA
Physically a well-proportioned race, these Arawaks are American Indians
dispersed over the more or less unexplored regions of British and Dutch
Guiana. Few, if any, of them are found in French Guiana. They lead a
very secluded life, holding themselves aloof from all other races, and
support themselves mainly by the chase. In numbers they are steadily
diminishing, largely as a result of their disregard of the elementary
principles of hygiene
