This peasant woman looks as though she might be the eldest sister of the five strapping little maids rather than their mother. They are natives of Hesse-Nassau and live in a village watered by the River Schwalm, where, for the most part, superstition and ancient customs still retain a powerful hold over rural life and are particularly constant in encouraging the wearing of the delightful costumes of long ago One of the most picturesque towns of lower Brittany, Quimperlé is famous for the personal charm and extraordinary capacity for work of its womenfolk, who customarily look as bright and neat in their everyday dress as in the holiday costumes seen here
